City Buys Barelas Rail Yards for $8.5 Million

Mayor Martin Chavez joined other supporters Wednesday to sign an $85 million check to purchase the old Barelas rail yards. The goal is to save the historic structures, which date to the early 1900s and sit on 27 acres near Second and Iron SW.

What do you think about that?

Sounds good. Now, all that you have to do is fix up the place. Best of luck!

I am really glad that ABQ bought the rail yards and is showing commitment to preserving this important historic site. I think this is a very important step for our city and could be a real opportunity for ABQ to be A MODEL for other cities who also have old urban industrial sites to deal with.

My concerns: That ABQ follows and does not lead. I hope that the "developers" who are involved in the project don't go overboard with the mixed use - retail and housing.

These yards are an asset to ALL of ABQ, not just Barelas, and priority should be given to public GREEN SPACE. Europe does incredible things with similar unused sites - converting them to public gardens and the like. We are limited only by our imaginations in this case....

ABQ show some innovation and not just do the usual "luxury loft" thing. Attention should also be given to the project's carbon footprint and being a GREEN site in every way possible.

THIS is what people want to see, what tourists want to see - this is the future and ABQ should take the opportunity to LEAD and INNOVATE and not do just the usual thing.
