Central New Mexico’s commuter
train continues to add stops to its line and now is considering pushing the
system north beyond Santa Fe to Espanola.
Crews have recently broken ground on a new station at Second Street and Rio
Bravo, and important connecting point, according to a Rail Runner spokesman.
“That station is a very integral part of our system because it will now
offer our riders an opportunity to connect to the airport with a shuttle,”
said Lawrence Rael.
A new station is expected to open at the end of the month in Belen, the
southernmost stop on the line.
Future plans include stations at both Isleta and Sandia Pueblos, on the
northern and southern boundaries of Albuquerque’s city limits.
A station in Santa Fe is expected to open in December of 2008. It will be
the northern most stop for the central New Mexico commuter train, at the
time, but there’s talk of expanding the line north to Espanola – and
possible even Las Vegas.
Currently the Rail Runner has stops in Los Lunas, Albuquerque, Los
Ranchos/Journal Center and northern Bernalillo at US 550.
